Diana Mini film Barcelona

Getting snap happy in Barcelona

So my package arrived from Australia and I completly forgot I packed my Diana Mini!
A super fun way to load 35mm film and play around with square or full frame shots with the choice to overlap images.  Here is my first roll focussing on the buildings, patterns & popular imagery of Spain.  These are the fragments of this lively city you first notice as a foreigner.  The result is layered dreamy effects of impulse documentation of my surrounding.

I am particuarly interested on how groups of photos can be arranged to set a mood, scene and tell a story.

Enjoy.

STUDIO VISIT- Alejandro DeCinti

Alejandro Decinti in his home studio

I had the pleasure of meeting Alejandro DeCinti over the weekend.
He was born in Chile and is now living in Spain since 2002. Well-known and exhibited through Europe I felt so privileged to be invited into his home and studio. So welcoming and accommodating, I met his family, sipped tea and talked art!

His passion to share his wealth of knowledge and experiences had me inspired. Alejandro’s large scale paintings capture the life in the city, people in bars, restaurants and shopfronts. For me he is capturing the modern day version of Manet’s ‘a bar at the Folies-Bergere’ (my favourite painting!)

His portraits of females & children show a more expressive technique, creating a balance between his realistic figures and abstract brush strokes. The layers of transparent drips and painterly application harmonise with his figures.

I was lucky to see his home studio as well as his school set up for teaching. So grateful to take home a signed copy of his published work, a big thankyou Alejandro

STUDIO VISIT- Asli Bolayir

Asli Bolayir in her studio, Barcelona

Thanks to Asli Bolayir for allowing me into her creative space. An inspiring artist living between Barcelona & Cyprus.

She says, 'I like the balance of Barcelona’s city life and the peaceful scenery of Cyprus'
.
Her mixed media works seem to have a spontaneous, free, poetic balance of expressive mark making, text and print.  Her studio reminded me of mine back home, boxes of materials, piles of magazines, assorted canvases leaning against every wall.

STUDIO VISIT- Estudio Nomada

Image: Mireia (my host from Jiwar) & UB in his studio

I had the opportunity to visit the guys at Estudio Nomada Barcelona. A great working space in the heart of Barcelona's Gothic district. An indepentant art school currently hosting 13 artists. The open plan space was filled with artist studios in an educational environment.  They also have a gallery space for exhibitions and classes to take palce (a life drawing class was in process during our tour!).  It was great to see such a buzzing work place.

Barcelona

After leaving Adelaide on the 17th of January we had until the 26th of Feb to visit family and see a snapshot of Europe.  We stopped over in Dubai and then spent a couple of weeks in England before heading to Paris and Venice.  After a whirlwind of packing the suitcases every 4 nights it was nice to arrive in Madrid knowing Spain was going to be home for the next month and a half!

Straight away the first impressions of Spain was this carefree, chaotic yet relaxed city.  I can see how they say Madrid is the city that never sleeps!  After some touristy stops in Seville and Valencia, filled with cured meats, cheese & tapas we were ready to settle in Barcelona

Super lucky to be staying in the heart of the district Gracia at Jiwar creation & society

A newly renovated residency, think antique furniture, high ceilings, patterned tiled floors, and open windows with balconies looking over the bustling street below.

Typically Spanish.

I have until the 7th of April to make the most of this beautiful city.
